Phát minh ô tàng hình che mưa bằng không khí

Một thiết bị có hình dạng như cây đuốc có thể được sử dụng như một chiếc ô chắn và bảo vệ người dùng trước mưa, gió, tuyết, hay thậm chí là hơi cay.

Мộт nhóm nghiên cứu sinh thuộc Đại học Hàng không và Vũ trụ Nam Kinh (Trung Quốc) đã phát minh ra loại ô tàng hình có thể thay thế cho ô vải truyền thống hiện nay. Với cơ chế sử dụng luồng gió thổi công suất lớn, chiếc ô hình cây đuốc có thể che mưa bằng cách thay đổi hướng của các giọt nước rơi từ trên cao xuống.

Người đứng đầu nhóm nghiên cứu này, Wang Chuan, 37 tuổi, người Nam Kinh (Giang Tô, Trung Quốc) đã cùng bạn bè lên ý tưởng từ tháng 7/2012 và nghiên cứu thực hiện sản phẩm này trong hai năm. Từ trước khi những chiếc ô trở thành biểu tượng của phong trào biểu tình tại Hong Kong, Wang đã nảy ra ý tưởng sau khi nhận thấy cách gió có thể thay đổi hướng mưa rơi trên nóc của một tòa nhà.

Đầu ô phình to hình củ hành chứa động cơ nhỏ xíu bên trong. Về mặt lý thuyết, nó hút không khí từ một đầu và thổi ra qua các lỗ nhỏ ở đầu còn lại với tốc độ cao tạo thành một lá chắn vô hình. Năm 2012, Wang cùng những người bạn tại Đại học Hàng không và Vũ trụ Nam Kinh hoàn thành mẫu thử nghiệm sau một tháng thực hiện, nhưng nó có nhược điểm là quá nặng và cồng kềnh.

Hai mô hình khả thi sau đó được thực hiện với sự hỗ trợ của các tiến sĩ từ Đại học Hàng không Vũ trụ Bắc Kinh. Thiết bị Air Umbrella ra đời, hoạt động bằng pin lithium, có thể nạp điện trong vòng một giờ, không tạo ra tiếng ồn hay độ rung.

Được biết, sản phẩm che mưa bằng không khí này chủ yếu dành cho phụ nữ với 3 loại khác nhau: Mô hình thứ nhất dài khoảng 30 cm và có thể hoạt động liên tục trong 15 phút. Loại thứ 2 dài 50 cm và thời gian chắn mưa khoảng 30 phút. Loại còn lại dài 81 cm và cũng có thời gian sử dụng trong nửa giờ.

Ô có thể che chắn khoảng không gian có đường kính khoảng 1 m và đủ che cho 1 – 2 người. Thiết bị có giá ban đầu khoảng 88 USD.

Ngoài tác dụng tránh mưa, loại ô này cũng có thể tạo thành lá chắn chống hơi cay. Tuy nhiên theo Wang, thiết bị được thiết kế với mô hình đồ chơi công nghệ cao và không thể coi là một loại vũ khí phòng vệ.

Tại Hong Kong, kính bơi, khẩu trang y tế, áo mưa, áo phông, hay chiếc ô trở thành vật dụng bảo vệ những người biểu tình khỏi hơi cay của cảnh sát. Để bảo vệ mình, người biểu tình che mắt bằng cách đeo kính bơi và gia cố thêm lớp ni lông phía ngoài, hay sử dụng khẩu trang y tế sánh cùng mặt nạ phòng độc chuyên dụng.

Chiếc ô (hay chiếc dù) mà không có tấm che mưa phía trên thì là một điều khá kỳ lạ, tuy nhiên một nhóm các nhà thiết kế đến từ Trung Quốc đã chế tạo ra Air umbrella - một chiếc dù có thể giúp người đi đường hoàn toàn khô ráo nhờ vào việc tận dụng không khí xung quanh. Các nhà phát minh gọi Air umbrella là "chiếc dù tàng hình", và quả thật khi bạn cầm Air umbrella ra để che mưa thì chắc chắn mọi người cũng sẽ nghĩ rằng nó tàng hình thực sự. 

Hiện tại thì Air umbrella vẫn còn đang trong giai đoạn nghiên cứu và phát triển, dự án này đang được gây quỹ trên trang KickStarter. Mục tiêu ban đầu là 10.000$, và số tiền gây quỹ đã là hơn 12.000$. Có tổng cộng 3 phiên bản Air umbrella, mức giá thấp nhất là 88$ (chưa kể phí ship ngoài nước Mỹ là 15$) đã bán hết. Dự kiến thì đến tận cuối năm sau, Air umbrella sẽ được giao đến tay khách hàng. Giá bán lẻ chính thức vẫn chưa được tiết lộ.

Sở dĩ nói Air umbrella là chiếc dù tàng hình vì nó không cần dùng đến tấm che mưa để giữ cho chúng ta khỏi bị ướt. Toàn bộ umbrella chỉ như một chiếc gậy, hay chỉ như cán tay cầm của các chiếc ô thông thường (có điều nó dài hơn nhiều). Cấu tạo của Air umbrella bao gồm 3 phần: ở dưới đuôi là cụm điều khiển, kích hoạt thiết bị hoạt động, phần thân là nơi chưa pin lithium, và phần đầu chính là motor. 

 

Cách hoạt động của Air umbrella: khi bạn nhấn nút kích hoạt "chiếc ô", lúc này năng lượng từ pin sẽ truyền lên cho motor hoạt động. Motor của Air umbrella sẽ hút không khí từ bên ngoài vào, sau đó một tấm quạt nhỏ ở phía bên trong sẽ có nhiệm vụ đẩy mạnh luồng không khí đó ra ngoài theo hai hướng. Và chính hai luồng không khí được đẩy ra từ Air umbrella sẽ tạo nên một "tấm màng che vô hình", làm chệch hướng bay của những giọt mưa rơi thẳng xuống. 

Các nhà phát triển cho biết, họ dự kiến tung ra ba phiên bản khác nhau của Air umbrella bao gồm: Air umbrella-a, được thiết kế dành riêng cho phụ nữ, có chiều dài 30cm, nặng 500g, pin sử dụng được trong vòng 15 phút. Tiếp đến là Air umbrella-b, đây là phiên bản phổ thông, dài 50cm, nặng 800g, pin dùng 30 phút. Và cuối cùng là Air umbrella-c, đây là bản có thể kéo dài ra được, chiều dài bình thường là 50cm, sau khi kéo ra thì sẽ có độ dài tối đa là 80cm, nặng 850g, pin dùng 30 phút.

Tất nhiên là Air umbrella có khả năng chống nước, để sạc chiếc ô này thì các bạn chỉ việc mở nút bảo vệ ở phía dưới và dùng cục sạc chuyên dụng để sạc thiết bị. 

Rõ ràng là với thời lượng hoạt động tối đa là 30 phút, Air umbrella chỉ lý tưởng với những ai muốn dùng ô để chạy nhanh về nhà, hay đi nhanh ra xe hơi. Bạn không thể nào dùng Air umbrella để đi dạo chơi trong công viên giữa trời mưa, đi ngắm cảnh mưa, lúc đó thì có vẻ áo mưa tiện lợi 10 ngàn đồng có hình Kim Bum ở ngoài bìa sẽ hữu ích hơn. 

Các nhà phát triển cho biết từ bây giờ đến cuối năm sau, họ sẽ không ngừng cải thiện khâu thiết kế cũng như cố gắng tìm cách cải tiến thời lượng pin tốt nhất có thể cho Air umbrella.

2 Chiếc Ô Che Mưa Bằng Không Khí

Invisible umbrella would use air to keep you dry

Shelter from the rain just got high-tech and invisible. A research and development team from China has come up with a battery-operated Air Umbrella, which creates a shield against rainfall via a jet airflow.

The gadget may seem like something out of a James Bond movie, and though it's still in the R&D stages, it is gaining popularity on Kickstarter. The Air Umbrella has surpassed its $10,000 Kickstarter fundraising goal with over $33,000 in support from over 275 backers.

Two models run on a 30-minute battery life -- not ideal for long commutes in a downpour, but the creators say they are working on improving that. The very visible (and bulky) base resembles a flashlight. Several versions provide options for a range of consumers.

The "b" or basic umbrella is about 20 inches long and weighs over a pound and a half, while the women's "a" version is smaller, at about a foot long and just over a pound, with only a 15 minute battery life. The scalable "c" product, which can be shortened from 31 inches to about 20 inches, is slightly heavier at 1.87 pounds.

As innovative as the product seems, this is not the first time air umbrellas have surfaced. As CNET points out, a Korean designer came out with the concept in 2010, but it never took off.

The latest inventors, who hold doctorates and advanced degrees from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, designed each umbrella to operate with high-speed jet air flow. "Jet airflow can isolate some objects," they explain on the Kickstarter site. "So when we make use of the airflow, we can protect ourselves from the rain drops... Then the airflow forms an umbrella with out visible cover."

Just like your traditional nylon taffeta umbrella, air umbrellas don't provide the best coverage in torrential rainstorms. The tech version also makes some noise. The developers admit that the products are most suitable for urban "users who are not demanding."

They're also a lot pricier than traditional umbrellas: the market price of the product is predicted to run around $200.

Funds raised on Kickstarter will go towards improvements in the appearance and battery life of the device.

Researchers say they will start manufacturing next year, and supporters can expect to receive their products by December 2015 -- or they will get a refund if creators can't make their deadline.

A Chinese R&D team have invented an Air Umbrella which can blast water away from the umbrella's owner. They explain how their invention deflects rain: "Air is everywhere on the earth. The flowing air can change the moving path of the object. The faster the air moves, the greater the energy is. The jet airflow can isolate some objects. So when we make use of the airflow, we can protect ourselves from the rain drops. Then the airflow forms an umbrella without a visible cover." Components are lithium battery, motor, controller and master switch. Nick Lavars at Gizmag said the "umbrella uses a lithium battery to power a motor and fan, which creates a cycle of air flowing through its tip to deflect the drops and form the protective layer." The South China Morning Post said that Wang Chuan and his friends have been working on the patented technology for about two years. The device that they came up with for using air flow to shield users from pelting rain had its roots in their working with postgraduates from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and then going out to test various types based on the idea, on rainy days. One of the samples worked to their liking and they then went to some graduates from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics to improve the design. "All of our tests and experiments were conducted under circumstances of heavy rains," they said. They also said, "If the wind is not very high, the air umbrella can still deflect the natural wind and rain and work well." Their Air Umbrella is not yet ready for primetime; the team says it is still in the stages of R&D. They have turned to Kickstarter for crowdfunding. The umbrella is targeted for December 2015. They already surpassed their funding goal of $10,000. having garnered at the time of this writing $32, 506. The lowest price available at the time of this writing is $118 for the umbrella-a with charger. (The creators said they have three different models in mind: A 30 cm, 500 g device, umbrella-a, for females, with 15 minutes of battery life. A standard model, 50 cm, 800 g, with a battery life of 30 minutes, and the scalable model—50 cm shortened and 80 cm when extended, weighing 850 g and also with battery life of 30 minutes.) Responding to a FAQ section about whether the battery life is rather short, they answered, "Generally speaking, the products are more suitable for the urban citizens or people who has a car." They were aware of the noise factor and addressed it. They worked to increase the air flow and reduce the speed of the motor, they said, and "sometimes you can just hear deep voice of air flow. To make it better, we added some material to absorb and reduce the noise. So the noise of the rain is much bigger than the air umbrella when it works." Their umbrella may be fine for the person who owns the device but won't the rain be blown over to people nearby? In their FAQ section of Kickstarter, they said, "Big and fast raindrops will be blown to a near distance while those small and slow raindrops will be blown to a farther distance. Generally 1 / 2 speaking, most raindrops will be blown to 50 to 70 centimeters away. If two persons are more than two shoulders away from each other, they will not affect each other. Also, nearby pedestrians will also take umbrellas if it is raining heavily. In this way, the rain will not be blown to other pedestrians. If nearby pedestrians do not take umbrella and close, they will be affected more or less, but they will get wet in a rainy day if not taking umbrella anyway." Anyone who has experienced the joy of driving through a rainstorm with the sunroof open understands how the airflow around the moving vehicle can keep you dry despite the exposure. Now a similar principle is being applied to create an umbrella that protects you from the rain using nothing more than an invisible air 'force field.'

Air Umbrella, developed by a Chinese company and recently funded on Kickstarter, uses forced air rather than fabric to create a protective canopy that keeps you from getting wet in the rain. You can view their kickstarter video here:

It's a clever concept and designers have done a good job of answering several concerns about the product. For instance, the sound generated by the device is minimal, especially when compared to the pitter-patter of the falling rain. It can create a protective canopy wide enough for two people to fit under, and it performs well even in heavy rain. The air shield can be cut through by high winds, but given that regular umbrellas typically fold over in similar windy conditions, the air umbrella is still an upgrade.

A few concerns do remain, however. For instance, the battery life is only about 15-30 minutes depending on the model, so you'll still want to walk briskly to your next destination when it's raining out. Also, while the air shield might push the rain away from you, it's likely to splash all that blown-away water on everyone else like a sprinkler. So the device might draw the ire of anyone else walking with you, or any helpless bystanders.

There are currently three different designs to choose from if you're interested in investing. Air umbrella-A is the lightest model, and is apparently designed specifically "for females," according to the Chinese developers. It is about 12 inches in length and weighs a little over a pound, and it runs for 15 minutes per charge. Air umbrella-B measures at nearly 20 inches long and weighs 1.7 pounds, and lasts 30 minutes per charge. Finally, the upscale C model also lasts 30 minutes, but is scalable between 20 and 32 inches depending on your needs.

So, in short, the good news is that this might be the end of having to lug around a soggy umbrella. The bad news is that the Air umbrella might be more aptly titled the Air sprinkler for anyone standing around you.

Is this the end for awkward and unwieldy umbrellas? Designers in China have teamed up with university students to invent a better kind of umbrella - a device that creates a force-field of air around you to shield you from the rain.

Umbrellas are kind of terrible. They’re a pain to carry around with you all day, they turn inside-out in the wind, and it’s a wonder that more eyes aren’t poked out by those protruding metal edges when a crowd of people funnel out of a train station and unfurl them all at once. But how do you make an umbrella less unwieldy, while maintaining the coverage?

Over the past two years, a team of designers in China has been working with postgraduate students at the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics to invent a new type of umbrella that works without those spiky, flimsy metal poles. In fact, it doesn’t even need a canopy. Instead, it keeps you dry by creating a ‘force field’ of air that circulates around you.

Dubbed the Air Umbrella, this nifty little hand-held device contains a lithium battery, a motor, and a fan, and together they work to create a continuous cycle of air that flows out from the tip. This air flow is strong enough to constantly deflect rain particles away from the user, and the team says that two people can fit under it comfortably.

According to Nick Lavars at Gizmag, the team is developing three models to take to market, with varying coverage space and battery life. Their smallest model will have a 30-centimetre-long handle and a battery life of 15 minutes. Another one will have a 50-centimetre-long handle and a 30-minute battery life, while the third option will be extendable from 50 centimetres to 80 centimetres and have a 30-minute battery life. They’re working on extending the battery life of all models, but plan to start delivering their products toKickstarter backers from December 2015.

Umbrellas are the worst, and not just because Rihanna sang a song about them that made turned a three-syllable word into a seven-syllable one. They turn inside out, they track water into your home, and we leave them on busses and subways so often that we probably replace our umbrellas at least once a month (or is that just me?). But now, inventors in China have developed an invisible Air Umbrella that blows rain and snow away, and there's no way you'll ever forget this nifty contraption because it is just about the coolest thing to happen to rain since that color-changing dress on Project Runway (anyone, anyone?).

Never again will you have to worry about fitting your bulky umbrella through a door, or worse, down a subway stairway. Nor will you ever have to fight with your umbrella to get it to actually do its job instead of running away. The Air Umbrella, creating by Chuan Wang and a team based in Beijing and Nanjing, is a magical baton that fends off the rain and elements by blowing the rain away in an umbrella-shaped circle around you. In essence, you will be standing under a dome of air that will create the same effect as having a fabric barrier between yourself and the precipitation, but without the fabric.

The Air Umbrella looks a bit like an oversized flashlight, or perhaps a miniature staff. It has the capacity to create a safe space three feet in diameter, which means that the umbrella should be able to cover two people. But with a battery life of just 30 minutes, don't expect to take a long, romantic walk in the rain.

 

The air umbrellas come in a variety of sizes, ranging from the "b" or "basic" model, which is not specifically marketed towards the PSL loving, Instagramming, scarf-wearing (guilty of all) demographic, but rather the consumer looking for a standard sized umbrella. This version weighs a little more than a pound and a half, and stands at around 20 inches. There is the smaller "a" model, which is just a foot long and about a pound in weight, but has a shorter battery life of just 15 minutes. And then there is the extendable "c" model, which can be extended or retracted to be between 20 and 31 inches, which clocks in at just under two pounds.

They also wanted to do away with the sheer canopy that is a staple of every umbrella. In fact, the only thing that this device needs is air.

It is believed that this device will keep people from worrying about their umbrella breaking or turning inside out in the wind. Early trials have proved to be successful.

Another one will have a 50-centimeter-long handle (19 inches) and a 30-minute battery life, while the third option will be extendable from 50 centimeters to 80 centimeters and have a 30-minute battery life. They’re working on extending the battery life of all models. At present time, it takes about half an hour to charge.

The team also added material to reduce the amount of sound and keep noise at a minimum.

For now, the Kickstarter has earned the team nearly 70,ooo dollars (they were originally seeking 10K). The project runs until October 24th and they plan to start delivering their products to backers around December 2015. Keep in mind, it will only work up to a certain wind speed. If gales get too strong, they will over power the umbrella (but that’s what happens now anyways).

 

Still, maybe keep the old umbrella around for a bit, just in case you need a backup.
